How to Prevent Addictive Behavior

Hello Dear One!

Have you ever felt an unclear hunger inside that has driven you to “drink” (eat/gamble/shop/act out…) and cause you to feel regret?

We have a variety of needs, and if those needs aren’t getting met, our being will DO SOMETHING about it in order to come back to a state of connection and balance.

Often we don’t even recognize that we do have needs, or that those needs might not be being met, but when we inexplicably act out in ways that we feel powerless to – it’s really a cry and clue about the fact that we NEED SOMETHING.

I found this brief synopsis of what dogs need in one of Cesar Milan’s books regarding animal training.

I think it’s QUITE applicable for humans as well.

The three departments that we will have some sort of HUNGER for if we’re not getting fulfilled fully are:

– EXERCISE
– DISCIPLINE
– AFFECTION

And what this really pertains to is:

– BODY
– MIND
– HEART

I’d argue that there’s also a spiritual element that many of us need nourishment in as well, but THIS is a REALLY good guideline and checklist to be continually attending to.

So how is this for you??

Are you getting all these boxes ticked?

Are you making a point to work both your body and your brain in ways that provide challenge and stimulation?

Are you spending time with loved ones that are PRESENT to you?  That FEEL GOOD to be around??

This shit MATTERS!

And if you are exhibiting less than desirable behavior that is keeping you in a loop of regret or frustration, AND far from your goals – you may want to evaluate this short list and put your attention on the part of you that really needs it.

I’ll just share that exercise is BEYOND easy for me, and truth be told, (focus on food/body) is often the tool that I’ll try to use for EVERYTHING.

WHICH DOESN’T WORK!

This is when emotional eating becomes a stronger desire for me.

NOW by making a point to keep learning and focusing on things that help me move my life/business in the desired direction AND spending time with beloved friends/family – I feel SO much more connected and in control.

And when I notice the feeling of internal pressure mount – I know my being is tapping me on the shoulder letting me know that I NEED SOMETHING.

And that those two “less exercised” parts of me need some attention.

So check out your checklist and see how routinely you’re getting these line items attended to.

ESPECIALLY if you go off the rails with less then ideal behavior with some regularity.

There’s logic in them thar hills!

Give yourself an opportunity to see it vs simply believing you need to, “try harder”.
